Octopus Communication Project Brief
A concise invitation for expert criticism and collaboration around a non-invasive, observation-first octopus communication research design.
Purpose
PFRG is developing an exploratory framework for studying whether recurring octopus visual and behavioral patterns can support cautious two-way interaction. The project does not begin by claiming that body patterns constitute a decoded language.
Expert input sought
- Cephalopod biology and welfare. Review low-disturbance observation and animal-care boundaries.
- Sensory ecology. Guidance on polarization imaging, lighting, species context, and behavioral confounds.
- Experimental design. Baselines, controls, stimulus randomization, coding, and replication.
- Computer vision. Methods for tracking chromatophore, texture, posture, and movement changes.
A repeated pattern is not automatically a word, and a response to light is not automatically communication. The design is intended to distinguish sensory response, learned association, correlation, and communicative function.
